As great as bamboo is, it's not de facto guilt-free. It's possible to harvest anything unsustainably, in this case erosion is a possible issue.

of course it goes without saying that the process of treating the bamboo to last forever is just as caustic to the environment as making plastic, but gosh it looks nice!

Bamboo is really quite beautiful and I do see that people will be more concerned about beauty than technical features once lcd monitors are commoditized.

Mass deforestation is a myth.. We have more trees now than we did in 1850.. (in the US at least, I know other countries suffer different fates)

However, that being said, bamboo is still a better choice for the same reasons.
