Hi Andrew,

Thanks a lot for a very comprehensive review. Indeed I found it very useful before I would buy the stuff.

I was thinking of using this device for a rather different purpose. We have to do a lot of Image analysis, that requires most of the time tracing some lines and shapes on image files (.tiff format etc) or on photoshop (.psd format). We would then like to leave these lines/shapes on the image itself. Putting it simply, we want to use 'Digital Pen' as a high precision tracing device/mouse and use the stanard darwing tools. Can this be done using EPOS Digital Pen or any other pointing device?

Nice review, but you didn't write a full page of A4, just the top two thirds (with extra large top margin). I have just purchased the zpen and found that the bottom third of the page the text it picks up is almost unreadable it's so wobbly (to coin someone else's phrase, it looks like a spider with Parkinson's). You can see that on your shape drawings. Whilst the lines at the top of the page are fine, the bottom of the page is dreadful. In the case of handwriting there is no way that the recognition software would ever manage to interpret it

Great review Andrew!

One question: I`m an aspiring cartoonist and would need to 'see' the tip of the pen as I`m drawing. Can the clear/transparent housing at the tip of the barrel be 'trimmed' off a bit and/or can an ink refill with a 'longer tip' be used instead in order to see the tip more clearly while writing/drawing? Thx!

Well done, Andrew. Yours is the most comprehensive review of this product on the web that I've found and it's full of practical considerations. Given the price this device is worth a go, despite the inconvenience of less than perfect handwriting. Thank you, Andrew, for giving this item the once over so thoroughly.
Now if only there was a more Mac friendly version...

A very good review.
I was wondering though what file types can the software produce? When you make a drawing is it converted to a known file type or will the software allow conversion??
I may have missed something, but I don't find this information anywhere.

In the specifications of the Zpen I've read that the resolution of the Zpen is about 300 to 900 dpi.
How does the resolution of the EPOS Digital Pen (Wired and Flash Drive) compares in that respect to the resolution of the Zpen?

Thanks a lot for your review, Andrew! Do you know if it is possible to capture instant-by-instant the dynamical information of the handwriting with this pen, that is, the x and y coordinate positions of the pen as functions of time?

The current EPOS digital pen does not include pressure sensitivity. As far as I know, only the Wacom products and other tablet based devices have the ability to detect stylus tip pressure.

Thanks for the review Andrew.
This is somehow most comprehensive and with a dose of real feature analysis.

I was wondering whether ZPen delivers pressure sensitive lines (digitally of course). In real calligraphy, subtle thickness and variation of it allows more personal feel to come out.
I am not so interested in OCR, but I am interested in a more natural feel to be kept. If anyone has some sugestions and comments it will be great.

i've always been interested in this kind of tech for graphics and such. like maybe to make some simple sketches that i can then import in photoshop or illustrator, and flesh design ideas out. do you think you could do a few freehand drawing tests, to see how the conversion is from the drawn images?

Thanks for the in-depth review. I've been following the development of the LIvescribe Pulse since reading about it on your site. I still may wait for a verdict on the Pulse before I decide which pen to go with . I've considered buying the Fly Fusion, but's it's just too big for me. Anyway, keep up the good work!
