It's called 'physical therapy ' and many people like my self ( I have MS ) spend a lot of tome using a Cain but also have tomes that a wheelchair is necessary. Even on my best days I do not trust my balance to cycle but this would be great to aid in keeping me mobile.

Wow, I can't believe the awful comments and title of this article. There are plenty of part time wheelchair users, and even full time ones that have good use of their legs for some things and not others. I'm one of them. I can walk with crutches for a short distance, wheel my chair for a longer distance, but THIS would allow me to bike to the stores like everyone else and help me keep the strength in my legs that I need to keep using the crutches on my good days.

I'm really sick of you able bodied folks making fun of us or thinking you know everything about how people with disabilities walk. YOU DON'T, and you're making yourselves look like a bunch of assholes right now.

HR and BP is higher in arm muscle exercises than in leg muscle exercises - this is actually an excelent rehab tool for post cardiovascular operation patients - since a normal wheelchair would involve them using their hands to move about, and an electric chair would not allow them to get any exercise at all - this can be started off with quite early, and help them strengthen not only skeletal muscle but also cardiac muscle and in addition help increase their cardiovascular level.

Does anyone know where one could get one of these in Europe, and how much they might cost? I also know a wheelchair user (who uses an exercise bike to get exercise) who could benefit from this.

It actually makes a lot of sense. Plenty of people who use wheelchairs can actually walk to some extent, but it's usually only in short bursts. When it becomes hard to walk, you stop walking as much, which will make it even harder because you're getting even less exercise in your legs. I know a couple older people who could benefit from this, as it would allow them to get more, low-impact exercise for their legs. It's a great idea.
