I'll try not to be a dorky math teacher, but it would use the law of cosines. The Pythagorean Theorem is a specific case of the law of cosines, and would only apply with a 90 degree angle.

Would also need a built-in level so you can be sure the right laser is pointing to a spot the same height as the left.
